The Writer and the Activist Meeting At the Intersection

It is often said that the individual has no effect on the path of the world. However in chaos theory, there is a minutely sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state:

The Butterfly Effect

Edward Lorenz, is derived from the metaphorical example of the details of a tornado (the exact time of formation, the exact path taken) being influenced by minor perturbations such as the flapping of the wings of a distant butterfly several weeks earlier. Lorenz discovered the effect when he observed that runs of his weather model with initial condition data that was rounded in a seemingly inconsequential manner would fail to reproduce the results of runs with the unrounded initial condition data. A very small change in initial conditions had created a significantly different outcome. Wikipedia — The Butterfly Effect

I started writing for free because in the course of trying to find funding for my business, I ran into corruption at the State (Maine). I started reading the statutes and I continued to find corruption. I saw that the media mainly published stories in supporting one point of view. There needed to be other points of view expressed so I started blogging about my research to create an alternate media voice, which was clearly missing.

I didn’t think many people would read what I was writing since it was detailed and analytical but from the start it became apparent that the subject which I was writing about were also my readers. The first blog I wrote was about an act which I had passed a few days before. I posted the link to the act on my blog and occasionally used the link to find the act. Several months later I clicked on the link and found that the entire text of the act had been changed without explanation.

Recently I wrote about several different acts. One was the act which established the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, over thirty years ago. I quoted the findings statement and commented on its clear globalist meaning. Several months later I clicked on the findings statement and found it had been deleted with nothing to replace it. I checked several other acts I had quoted in the same article and found that other quoted passages had also been deleted or moved from the source statute. This is how I know that the subject of my writing is reading my writing.

One day I was directly confronted in my local grocery story by my State representative for the Department of Economic and Community Development. She told me I had to stop writing about my local municipal economic development group and that there was NO connection between identical paragraphs found in both the 2015 Town Report and The Industrial Partnerships Act passed in 2013. I was “wasting my time she said”, not realizing that she was acting in her capacity as my government representative to attempt to silence my free speech.

Because I write for free I do not have an editor so people tell me, you cannot be a writer if your do not have an editor, which I see as having an additional meaning of “You can not be a writer if you do not have a publisher who decides whether you are allowed to say what you say”

I didn’t believe there is a newspaper in Maine who would allow me to say what I have been saying for over ten years but that is changing. I started commenting on my local newspaper. At first my comments were often deleted but that is no longer the case. Lately I am very unrestrained about voicing my opinion. My comments are not being deleted. Instead I see that they are being addressed in later articles which are published in the paper.

I would like to make money from writing but first and foremost, I want to have my own voice in a what matters. I do not want to sacrifice the one for the other. Writing allows one to create one’s own avenues of impact, sometimes in unanticipated ways.
