Here’s the pitch:

In the USA, we throw away more than 20 pounds of food per person every month while at the same time having 49 million people living with food insecurity.

How ridiculous is that?

America is the wealthiest country in the world yet has more hungry people than the entire population of Spain. We even have the abundance of food to solve this problem, yet without a last-mile distribution system to make donations economical, food providers have no other option but disposal.

This systemic problem is way too large for a single large organization to tackle… which is why Unsung leans towards the strategies of Uber and Airbnb who’ve pulled off similarly impossible feats. We’re connecting the food providers with extra food to volunteers who wish to make a difference — eliminating the need to pay for food OR delivery. And as a cherry on top, all meals delivered are posted to a live feed so that the community (and donating food providers) can see the impact being done in real time.

This is where you come in:

The #HackHunger movement is nothing without the grassroots support behind it. It’s a banner that’s easy to get behind but still needs people like you to push it forward.

Dean, that sounds great and all, you’ve jazzed my jimmies, but what can I actually DO to make a difference?

I’m glad you asked, because you can do a lot, RIGHT NOW that will significantly propel Unsung and our mission forward.

1. Talk to your friends about us. Everyone who hears about Unsung loves it. Start the #hackhunger conversation with your friends and explain how $500 billion of food waste can absolutely feed the 49 million Americans who live with hunger.
2. Hype the hell out of our social. The more followers we have, the more likes and retweets we receive, the more #hackhunger is mentioned — the more viral our posts go to make it to the top of everyone’s feeds. (socials)
3. Write about Unsung and #HackHunger. When people write about Unsung and our mission, it reaches new audiences and raisies our natural search engine optimization. This helps improves our first impressions and discovery. (reach out to hello@unsung.org for quotes!)
4. Become an Unsung Hero. Be the change you want to see. Sign up local restaurants and grocery stores to provide consistently donated food. Rally local Unsung volunteers. Start solving hunger in your community. Positively impact your community. (signup to our #hackhunger slack!)
