Beam Africa and the global community had a first-hand experience of what Police brutality looks like in parts of Nigeria. Senator Ihenyen, the General Secretary, SiBAN, and Lead Partner, Infusion Lawyer, recounts his experience working on several cases in the past involving tech and crypto stakeholders in Nigeria. During the insightful AMA session that took place in the Beam Africa Telegram community a few weeks ago. The guest shared details that involved members of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) which is a dreaded controversial police unit in the Nigeria Police Force.

In the name of battling internet fraudsters, SARS operative targets affluent young Nigerians who are suspected to be fraudsters. Sometimes, a routine search is mandated, such search involves observing one’s mobile devices, and when cryptocurrencies are spotted, it sometimes changes the narrative, as most fraudsters utilize Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in the country.

Intimidation, extortion, unlawful detention, assault and in many cases murder are regular occurrences in many states across the country. And that is why bodies like SiBAN (which stands for Stakeholders in Blockchain Technology Association of Nigeria) play an important role in fostering conversations with different arms of the government, on educating men of the Police force about crypto, and also protecting her members from the nefarious SARS that prey on innocent techies.

The conversation with Senator was an eye-opener for several members of the entire Beam community. And core team members present, most notably Raskul, the Community Tech Support and mining guru, as well another high profile member (who chooses to remain anonymous) volunteered to support the African community by paying the annual SiBAN membership fee for up to 10 members of the Beam Africa community.

The Beam African community will love to thank the Beam team led by our very own Raskul and the anonymous hero for their contribution towards safeguarding members of the African Beam community.
