Txakoli, beaches, & late nights: our sojourn in Basque Country
We traveled to Bilbao, Spain for a wedding in early August 2018. In this post, we recap details from the trip, which included a quick drive up to the south of France 🇫🇷
Bilbao had perhaps one of the most unique statues I’ve come across. This little pup is guarding the front doors of the Guggenheim, don’t be fooled by his bright and colorful demeanor, he may bite.
While in Bilbao, Anna and I attended a pre-wedding party on a tugboat. It was a blast, and a terrific way to see the city and surrounding outskirts.
Inside the Guggenheim was even more disturbing than the spider on the outside…
The wedding was simply amazing, a great boon for Anna and me. Set on serene landscapes of rolling hills accommodated by a relaxing vibe and terrific folks. A lot can be learned and applied from a Basque-style wedding, where great grandmas party ’til the break of dawn and everyone receives safe succor back to swank digs.
After the wedding (and a day of recovery on the beach with newfound friends), we rented a car and continued our trek up the Northern Basque Country. We settled in the little coastal village of Mézos, the definition of peacefulness. Surrounded by wildlife, farm-to-table food, and the tastiest wine one could find, made for the ideal time.
We stayed at the Maison de Mézos Place de l’Eglise — Au Bourg, 40170 Mézos, France Maison. The little B&B featured a lovely pool, the best home-cooked meals, and not an American in sight.
It was also a ~10-minute drive to the Atlantic coast, where we found beautiful white beaches and crashing waves. We packed some snacks and a bottle of wine and we were set!
Overall, it was a stellar trip. Our only regret is we didn’t purchase a case of txakoli to take back with us!
Till next time nerds…
