Abbott launched a point-of-care diagnostic test that detects COVID-19 in as little as five minutes. The test will run on Abbott’s portable point-of-care ID NOW platform, which is currently available in many urgent care facilities across the country.

On March 27, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced it would issue Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the molecular point-of-care test, which can deliver positive results in as little as five minutes and negative results in 13 minutes.

Abbott announced it is working with President Trump’s Administration to deploy tests to areas where they can have the greatest impact.

From Abbott: “The ID NOW platform is small, lightweight (6.6 pounds) and portable (the size of a small toaster), and uses molecular technology, which is valued by clinicians and the scientific community for its high degree of accuracy. ID NOW is already the most widely available molecular point-of-care testing platform in the U.S. today.”
