My top 10 Brazilian boogie tracks

As I have already mentioned in my previous chart “My top 10 vintage Japanese tracks” I will be focusing on World Music with my charts. This is mostly alternative older music that gets a second life due to the digitalisation and globalisation of the music landscape. This way new generations get to enjoy the music that otherwise would be catching dust in basements and attics.

For my second chart I would like to take you on a trip to South America, Brasil to be more precise. I have noticed a steady stream of represses and compilations released by the likes of Mr. Bongo, Preservation Records, Luaka Bop and Cultura Racional. Finally these long sought-after tracks were affordable at my local record store (HHV.de in Berlin— one of the biggest catalogues I’ve ever seen with very reasonable pricing). My biggest inspiration to get into Brazilian music was actually Sir Gilles Peterson, with his killer “Sonzeira — Brasil Bam Bam Bam” compilation (classic Brazilian boogie reinterpreted in 2014 together with the original artists, great docu here).

Let’s get into the Brazilian mood:

Marcos Valle — Estrelar
My absolute favourite Brazilian track of all time, the master Marcos Valle did it again, listen to the hook and try not to move!

Célia — No Boca Do Sol
A cover of the Arthur Verocai banger. I prefer this version because the production sounds better then the older Verocai recording, and Célia’s voice just kills it. Released on 7 inch by Mr. Bongo.

Tim Maia — Ela Partiu
One of the slower songs of the more disco-oriented Tim Maia. Originally released in 1975.

Azymuth — Samba Da Barra
Mesmerizing tune by Jazz band Azymuth. Surprisingly upbeat but relaxed at the same time. Recorded in 1986.

Arthur Verocai — Dedicada A Ela
Amazing love song by the one and only Arthur Verocai (in my opinion one of the godfathers of Brazilian music). Off the “Arthur Verocai” album first released in 1972, repressed by Mr. Bongo.

Marcos Valle — Para Os Filhos De Abraão
Second Marcos Valle tune in this chart, I just love the combination of the uptempo beat and sweet voice of Marcos. Untitled album reissued in 2017 by Preservation Records.

Sonzeira — America Latina
This is the 2014 interpretation by Marcos Valle (for Gilles Petersons Sonzeira project) of a classic track by Osmar Milito.

Tim Maia — Nação Cósmica
One of his more uptempo releases, funky as f*ck!

Sonzeira — Xibaba (She-Bã-Ba)
Also from the Sonzeira Project, thats why the album was called Brasil Bam Bam Bam, wild percussion on this one.

Azymuth — Folklore
When I first heard this track I thought it was a recent house-production, turns out this was recorded in 1986 by the Jazz band Azymuth. Absolute Banger!

Since I love recording sets as much as writing about music I also prepared a little set for you with Brazilian music, these 10 will be found in there as well!
