Chess comes initially from India, then the Arab world and Persia. The term ‘checkmate’ comes from Arabic. By the late 15th century, it had been through a series of prohibitions and Christian church sanctions, and chess is now a subject in schools in Armenia and the Republic of Kalmikia, in Russia.
