Social media platforms allow anyone to easily interact and connect with one another. However, with recent censorship and privacy concerns happening, crypto recently saw an uptick in user adoption and use cases for Decentralised Social — some call this web3 social or SocialFi as well.

In today’s article, we’ll cover:

  • How to get started with Warpcast
  • What is Warpcast and Farcaster?
  • Why use Warpcast?

How to get started with Warpcast?

Joining Warpcast is easy if you have previously set up a crypto wallet before. You may use Bebop’s referral link to redeem 50 Warps for free and follow the steps below to create your Warpcast account.

  1. You will need to download Warpcast app on your mobile device from corresponding operating system app stores.
  2. Registering a new Warpcast account requires an e-mail address and approximately $5/yearly payment as storage data costs (fees also vary depending on location).
  3. You will be provided with a 24-word seed phrase that generates the keys to your new wallet tied to Warpcast — make sure to back up your recovery phrase as you will not be able to retrieve your Farcaster account in case you lose access to it
  4. Once your Warpcast account is created, you can use it directly on your mobile device or log onto the desktop app by scanning a QR code with your mobile device.

And voilà, you can now see other users’ casts, engage with casts and start casting your own posts!

By using Bebop’s referral link, you can redeem Warps — Warps are primary in-app currency used to create new Farcaster apps, gifting referral invites, hosting Channel or minting NFT. Warps function more like in-app points, rather than token.

💡Instead of “tweeting” and “repost” like X (previously known as Twitter), Warpcast’s version of the terms are “casting” and “recasting”.

What is Warpcast and Farcaster?

Warpcast is one of the largest apps built within the Farcaster ecosystem — just like X (formerly Twitter), users can follow people, post content, or engage with content.

Unlike traditional social apps, Warpcast is built on Optimism and Ethereum blockchain. This means you own your own social identity, content and connections since the blockchain is open and permissionless. While the idea of decentralised apps are still relatively new, there has been a growing popularity within native crypto communities.

Homepage of Warpcast

Farcaster is a decentralised social network protocol built in 2020 by Dan Romero and Varun Srinivasan with focus on interoperability, privacy and user autonomy. Essentially, elements of Farcaster and Warpcast such as user data are stored on-chain, while the information on engagement and posts stored off-chain using P2P servers called “Hubs”. Developers then create permissionless platforms for users to interact with.

Farcaster currently has a growing ecosystem of decentralised social apps including Warpcast which mirror functionalities of popular social apps including Twitter, Medium, Spotify, Discord and more.

Why use Warpcast?

Frames

Frames is an innovative feature within Farcaster protocol and mainly used within Warpcast app, for now. Frames allow users to access another embedded app from within their social feed, without having to leave Warpcast and thus, improving user experience.

Diagram shows the difference between OG and Frame OG inside Warpcast https://docs.farcaster.xyz/learn/what-is-farcaster/frames

Frames are usually displayed with an interactive visual with buttons for users to click, and perform a variety of actions — these actions can also be checked against qualifying criteria on-chain or off-chain, such as holding a certain ERC-20 token, NFT or any engagement within Warpcast. Currently, there are many Frames examples to explore that allow users to play games, mint collectibles/ NFT, swap or claim tokens, perform E-Commerce actions, and many more.

Anyone can create a Frame on Warpcast as there are many resources available. As more developers experiment with Frames’ possibilities, there will also be more use cases in the future.

Channels

Instead of hashtags, Warpcast implemented Channels for aggregation of community topics — think of Channels just like Reddit’s subreddits. A channel is a public space for communities to have conversations around a topic.

Anyone can create a public Channel adhering to guidelines by paying 2,500 Warps yearly — that’s approximately $25. You can also cast within a public Channel or follow a Channel to create a new feed on their timeline. However, some Channels are gated and will require you to pay Warps in order to cast within the Channel.

Tipping

Social interaction on Warpcast is gamified with a tipping feature — DEGEN token became the most popular token for tipping on Warpcast. Eligible users get a daily token allowance which can be sent to other Warpcast users by replying “amount $DEGEN” as a cast.

Example of a tipping cast with DEGEN

In order to activate your daily DEGEN tipping allowance, you must complete the following requirements:

  • Having at least 10,000 $DEGEN with your connected verified address
  • Posted at least 3 original casts
  • Wait for 48 hours after to activate tipping allowance

DEGEN tipping allowance will be reset daily and unused DEGEN allowance daily will be reset. The size of tipping allowance is influenced by various factors including engagement received and perceived within the community. Users can use Frames created by Warpcast community to check their allowance easily as well.

Users can then visit https://www.degen.tips/ and connect their wallet to claim their DEGEN tips received on Warpcast as part of Degen’s airdrop program. Do note that this site is not endorsed by Bebop and its security cannot be guaranteed — DYOR.

Conclusion

With the current social apps facing scrutiny over privacy, plaguing bots and increased monetisation, Farcaster and Warpcast offer users a decentralised social platform with enhanced experience. It is also important to note that this experience is still in its nascent stage and many modifications will be done in the future, therefore the idea of decentralised social experience may or may not succeed.
