My life as an Entrepreneur
Let’s get back to the end of my Post-Grad course on Digital Media, in 2017. At that time I had already started my own parallel universe and also my MA course in Anthropology.
I realized that I didn’t want to be a College Professor, but to research projects more like those I did with my HCI group. To do so, and having all my anthropological research background, I drowned in the universe of Digital Anthropology, especially by the guidance of Daniel Miller’s work. At the same time I got to know better some Design Thinking tools such as the Double Diamond, Personas and Customer Journey.
I started to do some freelance work with academic text edition and field research. With my therapist I realized that I wanted to have my own company, where I would be able to research and also do some academic stuff. But I didn’t know anything about having a business, so I thought of getting into a Business School. The thing is it would cost money and time that I didn’t have. To fulfill my needs for business skills I decided to begin a journey with cosmetic sales. That went surprisingly well and I really learned communication and persuasion skills that are really useful today.
Then, in the beginning of 2018 I created Bebotê, a company that at first had a multiplicity of areas, such as cosmetic sales, anthropological research, digital marketing, academic texts revision and even embroidery sales.
In 2019 the company got bureaucratically legal and the funnel of services began to get smaller. But it was with a rebrand made in 2020 that I found the core of Bebotê, that now is a space to do and think design together with anthropology. We still do some academic text review and other academic related services, but more and more our focus is design and digital experience. Now Bebotê is not only mine, but also Fernanda’s and we keep on growing and learning.
By 2021 Bebotê is our only money resource and it is going well, even with all the pandemic scenarios and the political-economical mess we Brazilians are facing.
