Now in its fourth year of publication, the chart provides an overview of the key players investing and acquiring tech startups in the region, and has been cited as the most comprehensive investing and M&A reference available for both startups and investors alike in the sector.

We have revised last year’s edition to improve categorization and geographic representation. Thereby focusing on active investors in BECO’s investment region, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and UAE; as well as global investors that have been actively investing or acquiring in these respective countries as well.

The newly refined Periodic Table includes 148 active investors, that have made at least one investment into a tech startup in 2018, spread over 7 distinct categories. MENA VC Funds (34), Incubators & Accelerators (29), Corporate Tech Investors (26), International VC Funds (22), Micro VCs (15), Angel Investors (13) and Tech Acquirers (9).

In 2018 we saw a significant increase in the Micro VC, with 10 new funds added to our radar. The Micro VC category increased by 200% compared to 2017, making it the highest growth category. Micro VCs generally write smaller cheques, so we can expect to see a surge of investments in early stage startups in the coming years.

Another interesting observation was on the Incubators & Accelerators category. Thirteen entities from this category on our 2017 list ceased to exist in 2018. It’s not all bad news though, the highest performing Incubators & Accelerators have held their ground, and new internationally renowned accelerators have set up in the region in 2018.

Finally, 2018 saw 22 International VC Funds investing in the region, as opposed to 10 in 2017; a 120% increase. The top MENA startups have managed to attract global VC’s attention to the region, a trend that we only see accelerating in the near future.
