Should we write every day on Medium?

I took out a paid member on Medium and mainly to get unlimited reads on the platform 5 years ago.

For a long time, I had no idea that Medium was monetizing writers’ stories.

One day when I was doing my regular reading on the platform, some stories started to appear on the Medium homepage.

The title of one of them caught my attention and title of the story was;

“I Earned $2,800 This Month by Writing on Medium”.

Immediately, I started to search for “How to Make Money on Medium” — “How to Make Money on Medium?” etc. on Google.

At that time, I could not find a proper source written in detail in my native language in Turkish and I continued my research in English and found the following statistical data.

60% of Medium writers earn more than $1 and 8% earn more than $100.

So far, the highest monthly earnings on Medium are $21,650.

The highest income from a single post on Medium is $8,855.

These were incredible levels for what can be achieved by writing stories and articles on a platform.

I continued my research by reading stories on Medium, where hundreds of writers were sharing their monthly income.

The numbers I saw were usually over $100.

Thinking, “What do I have to lose?”, I applied for MPP and after a painful process, I was approved. Because I was already writing regularly day to day on my own blog.

On the evening of November 28, 2021, I first shared the one story on my Medium English account.

At that time, no matter how much my corporate workaholicism penetrated my veins, I wrote what I knew best, “Project Management” as my first article.

Since my first article coincided with the close of the month, it earned only 18 cents.

I was incredibly happy and immediately started making calculations.

In plain logic, if I write one story a day, that’s thirty a month.

If I write two a day, that’s sixty.

$1 from a article, that’s $30 a month… At $2 from article, that’s $60 a month.

The biggest mistake I made was to focus on the numbers — the income, not the quality.

In the face of the desire to earn dollars, my passion for writing was suddenly lost in the numbers.

I rolled up my sleeves and started writing stories like a factory every day.

Sometimes two stories a day, sometimes three on weekends or days off.

Every day, I only opens the MPP earns screen.

I was looking at how much my income increased day by day.

The next day it happens. “My income is low.

Then start to write more. Write more Write more Write more ENOUGH!!!”

For two years I kept writing stories like a factory.

I made some earnings every month, but I stayed at %80 of the $2,800 monthly earnings levels like in that first article I saw.

They used to say that 8% of writers on Medium would earn over $100.

Well, that didn’t happen.

What was my mistake? — I guess I didn’t do what that famous writer said.

I didn’t bleed into my stories when I was writing.

I have to say that I definitely didn’t.

This experience may have cost me two years, but it brought me to a level of experience and level that I can’t believe for myself.

So I’m glad I tried this. And I can write this article for my writer friends who had the opportunity to read it while I was still at the beginning.

As for the question I asked in the subtitle;

Should we write every day on Medium?

Of course NO.

But remember, Medium is the platform of wolves.

Creating a 750-word story on Medium every day means writing 22,500 words a month.

This is the same size as writing a 120–150 page book every month.

Writing on Medium every day means spending a similar amount of time producing enough words to write a thick novel every 2–3 months.

Of course, there have been benefits to consistently producing content.

But it didn’t translate into the financial levels I had hoped for by writing in English on Medium.

In the end, I uncovered lessons that were more important and invaluable than my earnings.

That’s what really makes the difference.

When I started my Medium journey, I was armed with ambition and a determination to achieve great things.

I diligently followed the advice of experienced writers and published articles every day, hoping to strike gold.

However, despite my efforts, the response was lackluster and frustration began to set in.

It was during this period of frustration that I realized a very important truth:

Quality beats quantity.

While consistency is important, it’s the substance of your content that really resonates with readers.

I shifted my focus from producing mass-produced pieces to crafting thoughtful, engaging narratives that truly connect with my audience.

This shift in approach has been transformative.

I delved deeper into topics that resonated with me personally and brought authenticity and passion to my writing.

By sharing my own experiences, vulnerabilities and triumphs, I invited readers into my world.

But it was not only about baring my soul;

it was also about honing my craft. I spent time and effort honing my writing skills, studying the intricacies of storytelling and experimenting with different narrative techniques.

Each piece has been an opportunity to grow, a chance to push the boundaries of my creativity and engage my readers in new ways.

Creating a sense of community was equally important.

Writing can be a solitary endeavor, but the power of collaboration and support on platforms like Medium cannot be underestimated.

I actively interacted with my fellow writers, offering feedback, sharing insights and making real connections.

In doing so, I have not only expanded my network, but I have also received invaluable inspiration.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without resilience. Rejection and disappointment are commonplace in the writing world, but it’s how you bounce back that really determines your success.

I’ve learned to accept failure as a stepping stone to growth, to use setbacks as opportunities to reevaluate, improve and ultimately evolve.

In the end, my journey on Medium taught me that success is not a destination, but a journey filled with dedication, authenticity and the will to improve.

While there is no one-size-fits-all formula for success, by staying true to yourself, honing your craft and making genuine connections, you can chart your own path to prosperity.

So, all you aspiring writers out there, remember this:

Writing on Medium every day may not get you to the top, but the right approach can get you closer to your dreams.

I have learned and experienced that when I start to bleed into my stories, no matter how few I write in number, I can get more than enough back from my readers.

Then I start to earn more on Medium.

To inspire all new writers and keep their motivation high, I’ve prepared a newsletter where I share all the techniques I learned last 5 years, Join Here.
