Dark Energy is a young technology startup founded by two BYU students, Garrett Aida and William Lam. Their product, the Dark Energy Reservoir, is a lightweight and powerful portable charger that can charge a mobile phone up to six times. In March of 2013 the Dark Energy Reservoir raised over $170,000 on Kickstarter.

Leadership author Simon Sinek said, “Stand for people. Not a product or service or metric or number. If we stand for real, living, breathing people, we will change the world.”

Garrett Aida, co-founder of Dark Energy, not only wants to stand for real people, but also to inspire them.

“The Dark Energy Lifestyle is about pushing the limit and pushing the envelope,” says Garrett. “Pushing the limit gives us satisfaction. We want to build products that will help you do that, whatever your passions / motivations may be.”

In a casual interview at Cubby’s, Garrett shared four principles for aspiring entrepreneurs that have helped his company achieve early success.

1. Prioritize

“Pick what is most important and what needs to get done and do it!”

2. Get Freaking Committed

“You need to give it your all. People say that you shouldn’t put all of your eggs in one basket. It is complete bologna! I say put all of your eggs in one basket and watch that basket! Get committed or somebody will empty your basket.”

3. Be Careful Whom You Listen To

“Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you can’t. There are a million naysayers in the world. Just don’t listen.”

4. Get a Vision + Nail the Details

“Think big! Many times we think too small. People are inspired by people who have a vision. When you feel like somebody is building something important, it is inspiring. You can create a strong team through having a vision and commitment. Envision what you want and don’t give up.

“Along with a vision you need to give attention to detail. Although it may be difficult, have a big vision and nail the details at the same time. If you can, you’re a super star.”

Dark Energy certainly encapsulates these 4 principles. They are quickly growing and gaining traction in their market. Dark Energy is a perfect example of what a student-run company with a vision is able to accomplish. We have all of the resources we need to create a product, service, or business that can change the world. We just need to believe it and take the steps to accomplish it.
