When AI Meets Biology

Saving the bees is a worldwide concern. A significant share of our nutrition relies on the single efficient pollinator, the honey bee.

While the honey bee is going rapidly extinct, we at Beewise create the solution: The BeeHome.

The two key factors for succeeding in that are people and technology. While dealing with multidisciplinary technology concerns, the heart that makes BeeHomes worldwide tick is AI.

Our Machine Learning mechanism enables us to identify a wide range of contents in a comb frame. From the amount of honey and eggs to the brood's age, the queen's location, and notorious parasites like the Varroa mite.

The pipeline

The robotic system, equipped with our unique image acquisition system, is responsible for composing the images of the frames, along with additional data collected from the surrounding sensors.

The files are transferred to the cloud through an ETL process — preparing and processing the data before transporting it to AI.

Our Machine Learning modules will then predict what they have been trained for and send their findings to the business logic layer.

Uncharted territories in research

Zooming out from the cell level to the whole frame has allowed us to spot and monitor contents' patterns. While extracting insights off these repeated behaviors, we discover that many of them have not yet been researched. This has blown additional wind in our sails, broadening our mission objectives from saving the bees and halting their rapid extinction to boosting the world of beekeeping in a way that will help the honey bees' population prosper, restore and maintain their natural balance.

Zooming out more, we examine how traditional beekeeping operations like frames and honey extraction affect the bees' health. Having this variety of procedures continuously observed by our Machine Learning models in scale while having frequency, seasonality, and timing in mind already yields exciting news to the beekeeping industry.

Precision agriculture

Traditional beekeeping commonly uses chemicals to treat the bees' hazards. Zooming into the cell level again, AI let us unlock precision agriculture for the beekeeping and pollination industries. Combining AI and precise robotics allowed Beewise to pioneer the clean and friendly maintenance of the bees' environment by applying a cell-level treatment.
