A new awards scheme has been announced to celebrate the best young journalists currently working in the national and regional press.

The Press 30 Under 30 Awards will celebrate and recognise journalists, reporters, editors, and section editors, all under the age of 30. It is organised by Haymarket on behalf of the News Media Association, the collaboration which drives the Regional Press Awards.

The new scheme will be judged by a panel of leading journalists and editors within the industry, with winners to be revealed at a London ceremony in November 2024.

Building on the renowned Press Awards and Regional Press Awards — known as the “Oscars of British journalism” — the 30 Under 30 Awards are designed to highlight the future stars of the industry, support news organisations in recruiting and developing talent, and set a new standard for aspiring young journalists.

To be eligible for the awards, journalists must be aged under 30 on 30 September 2024 and submit three pieces of written work published by a UK-headquartered media organisation within the previous 12 months.

Owen Meredith, chief executive of the News Media Association, said: “There is a diverse range of talented young journalists and associated professionals working across the local, regional, and national press and these awards offer an opportunity to recognise and celebrate that talent. In an information-overloaded world, journalists cut through the noise, to uncover the stories that matter and need to be told.

“Journalism offers an exciting, stimulating and immensely varied working life, and we hope these awards will encourage even more young people from different backgrounds to consider it as a desirable career choice.”
