Michael Purton — regional editor of Newsquest’s titles in Worcestershire and Gloucestershire — is leaving the company for a new role in PR.
Michael had been editor of the Gloucestershire titles from 2015 to 2017 before taking the helm at the Worcester News and its sister titles.
In April 2019 he took over again in Gloucestershire, while remaining in charge in Worcester, before being appointed the new role of regional editor.
In this role, as well as the Worcester News, Michael was responsible for the world’s oldest existing continuously published newspaper The Berrows Worcester Journal, and other prestigious weekly titles such as the Stroud News & Journal, Wiltshire & Gloucestershire Standard, Gloucestershire Gazette Series, Malvern Gazette & Ledbury Reporter and Evesham & Cotswold Journal.
During his tenure the Worcester News won Newsquest’s News Brand of the Year award for 2018 and the Midlands Media Award for Campaign of the Year in 2019.
Michael said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with Newsquest and will be very sad to say goodbye — but, after 14 years in regional journalism, now feels the right time for a new challenge.
“I’m very proud of everything we’ve achieved at the titles I’ve led, especially the incredible job we’ve done in the past 12 months by being the trusted source of information for our communities during the Covid pandemic.
“I’d like to thank everyone at Newsquest who I’ve worked with — we have a fantastic team with some of the best minds in the industry, and it’s been a pleasure to have been part of that.”
Michael is moving into a role as Head of PR for Sanity Marketing which operates primarily in London and New York. He will be leading the team there in providing content for national publications.
Toby Granville, editorial director at Newsquest, said: “We are sorry to see Michael go. He has been a great guy to work with and made a big difference on his titles while editor. I’m sure he’ll do very well in his new role in PR and wish him every success for the future.”
