Industry leaders to debate Future of News at Society of Editors conference

Editors and industry experts will be among those gathering to discuss agenda-setting ideas, emerging technologies and press freedom at March 2023 event
Influential editors, renowned correspondents and industry experts will come together next month at the Society of Editors Media Freedom Conference to debate the Future of News.
Taking place at the Leonardo Royal Hotel in London on March 15 2023, the high- profile event will feature an Editors’ Panel dedicated to highlighting current threats to press freedom alongside confirmed speakers including BBC presenter Clive Myrie, Daily Mirror Editor Alison Phillips and Vice World News reporter and TikTok newsgathering pioneer Sophia Smith Galer.
The conference, a major highlight of the media calendar, will bring together more than 200 leading editors and journalists from all sectors of the UK national, broadcast and regional media with discussions on the future of royal reporting, the opportunities and risks posed by the use of AI, how to engage new audiences and secure subscribers and trust and transparency in the industry.
A full list of speakers announced so far can be on the Society’s website and includes: Ben Taylor, the newly-appointed Editor at The Sunday Times; Sarah Whitehead, Deputy Head of Newsgathering at Sky News; Katie Razzall, BBC Culture and Media Editor; Maria Breslin, Editor of the Liverpool Echo; Camilla Tominey, Associate Editor covering politics and the royals at The Daily Telegraph; Gabriel Pogrund, Whitehall Editor at The Sunday Times; Sophie Peachey, Producer and Journalist at The News Movement; Nic Newman, Senior Research Fellow at the Reuters Institute for Journalism and Professor Charlie Beckett, Founding Director at Polis and Head of the Polis/LSE Journalism and AI research project.
Looking ahead to next month’s conference Dawn Alford, Executive Director of the Society of Editors said: “We are delighted that such renowned editors, journalists and industry experts will be headlining the Society’s programme on 15 March and we look forward to welcoming all our members and attendees to a fantastic day looking at what lies ahead for the industry.”
Further panellists and keynote speakers will be announced in due course alongside the recipient of a special fellowship award for outstanding contribution to journalism.
