JPIMedia’s digital transformation in Scotland is beginning to take shape with a series of key appointments.

The Digital Acceleration programme — piloted in the North East of England — sees newsrooms primarily focus on increasing the amount of traffic to websites, growing the number of loyal users and pages they are viewing while maintaining print performance.

Last month, JPI said anew all-Scotland structure will be created incorporating The Scotsman, Edinburgh Evening News, Scotland on Sunday, Falkirk Herald, Fife Free Press and Southern Reporter into the Digital Acceleration model.

All other weekly print titles will form part of the small titles unit that sits alongside the DA structure.

Key appointments this week:

  • Alan Young is appointed Head of Conten
  • Dale Miller is appointed Deputy Head of Content
  • Sam Shedden is appointed Senior Live Editor, along with Joe Cawthorn and Catherine Salmond as Live Editor
  • The following are appointed Specialist Editors: Fiona Dobie (Geographic), Allan Crow (Geographic), Stephen Wilkie (Geographic Edinburgh), Iain Pope (Topics) and Gina Davidson (Politics- Interim)
  • Graham Bean is appointed Sport Specialist Editor
  • Mark Atkinson takes up the post of Football Clubs Editor
  • Andy O’Brien is appointed Head of Audio Visual

Frank O’Donnell is lead the implementation of the Digital Acceleration model as the Editorial Director for Scotland before leaving JPI to join DC Thomson as the Editor-in-Chief of The Aberdeen Press and Journal.

Frank has spent 19 years with the Edinburgh Evening News and The Scotsman, having edited both titles, as well as Scotland on Sunday, and carried out a number of other roles during that time.

As Editor of The Scotsman, Frank has overseen the rebuilding of the title’s political stature, modernisation of its Scottish news agenda and introduced a subscription paywall to the digital site.
