New September date for virtual event — and there’s a special category for teams who helped keep communities informed during the Covid-19 pandemic

There is still time to make your entries for the Regional Press Awards.

The industry’s awards will celebrate the exceptional work of regional and local newspapers and news websites from 2020, as the presses continued to turn and digital traffic soared in the face of the global pandemic.

With traditional categories for individual journalists ranging from Columnist to Sports Journalist of the Year, the awards will for the third time include the Cathryn Nicoll Award for Interviewer of the Year. This special category, supported by the NMA, will reward a £500 cash prize to a young feature writer.

There are also awards to celebrate the emerging talent in digital fields — from Digital Live News Reporter to Social Media Journalist of the Year and Data Journalist of the Year.

Alongside this a host of team categories exist to recognise the production and design of regional magazines and supplements, as well as awards for collective digital output such as the Overall Digital Award and Social Media Team of the Year.

A free-to-enter Special 2020 Award has been introduced to recognise individual journalists, teams and support staff who have gone that extra, extra mile to ensure their publications/websites continued to function during the Covid-19 crisis.

The awards will culminate in the prestigious newspaper of the year categories, with a new category for Sunday Newspaper of the Year created this year to acknowledge the work of Sunday teams as a distinctly unique offering to that of existing categories celebrating Weekly Newspaper and Daily Newspaper of the Year.

Winners for the awards will be revealed in a virtual ceremony on 16 September.

Entries for the two Campaign of the Year categories will also be entered into the Making a Difference ~ People’s Choice public vote and announced as part of Journalism Matters Week later in the year.

Entries will be open until 6pm on 1 June. The entry price has been kept at the same level as last year.
