May’s most social local news stories revealed

The courtroom hearings involving Amber Heard and Johnny Depp in America have made headlines around the world — for understandable reasons.

But it was a surprise appearance by Pirates of the Caribbean star Depp in Sheffield last week which proved to be the most social local news story of the month.

Using social analytics tool Newswhip, Behind Local News has analysed the stories from local news publishers around the UK to find the ones which generated the highest number of interactions in May.

Our list only contains stories from local publishers which are local news stories, leaving to one side national stories which have been published by local newsrooms.

In May, the local news story which had the biggest reaction on social media was from the Sheffield Star:

The Hollywood star, whose appearances in a court in Virginia have been every bit as box office as many of his films, apparently left his court hearing to travel to the UK to appear alongside Jeff Beck at the City Hall in Sheffield.

Combined with YorkshireLive’s take on the same story, Depp’s appearance in Steel City attracted 115,000 interactions.

The birth of a Brazilian Tapir at Amazona Zoo in North Norfolk was the third most social local news story of May, and reported by the Eastern Daily Press.

The EDP told readers it was the fourth time Emma, the mother Tapir, had tried to have a baby.
