New city websites launch with promise to champion — and scruntise — local life
News websites in three cities launched this week with a promise to champion local life — and scrutinise the things which need to improve too.
JPIMedia has launched its ‘World’ brand in Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow. Further launches are expected in locations including Bristol. Newcastle, London, Birmingham and Wales in the weeks ahead.
The company says more than 40 people will work across eight new sites, with support from city-based local TV services which share a chairman in David Montgomery with JPIMedia.
The editor of ManchesterWorld is Jenny Simpson. In a letter to new readers, Jenny said: “We’re here to bring you insight, analysis and unique perspectives on the news and developments that matter most in your day-to-day lives.
“We’ll dig into the big issues which affect our city, from the environment to transport — but also offer you the inside track on Manchester’s vibrant social scene and sports clubs.
“We want to champion the multitude of areas where Manchester leads the way and be a positive voice for our city — but we aren’t afraid to scrutinise things which need to improve too.”
In Liverpool, Dominic Raynor is in charge.
He wrote: “At LiverpoolWorld, we want to celebrate it all as we offer a fresh perspective that strikes a chord with the proud people that live, work and play here.
“Our local team, who all live in Merseyside, understand the culture of Liverpool and will provide insight, opinion and expertise on the news, issues and events that animate this great city.
“We want to be passionate champions for the region, but will never shy away from asking challenging questions on the big issues that matter to you.
“At LiverpoolWorld, we want to start fresh and interesting conversations on city life.”
The launch piece named Dominic as editor, and introduced Will Rooney as football journalist and Emily Bonner as broadcast journalist.
In Glasgow, GlasgowWorld promised: “Glasgow World will showcase the best of Glasgow, aiming to become a one-stop-shop for both residents and visitors looking for a guide to what’s on, where to eat and drink and what issues are affecting life in Scotland’s biggest city.”
Glasgow World is edited by Rosalind Erskine, who joins from the Scotsman. A number of weekly JPI titles are being folded into GlasgowWorld.
The local ‘World’ brand made its debut in Lincolnshire earlier this year, when the company brought together multiple weekly titles under the LincolnshireWorld brand.
In its half-year report to the city, NationalWorld said more such brands would launch, bringing together multiple local news titles.
Since being purchased by NationalWorld in January, JPI Media has also launched a national website, called NationalWorld. The company has publicly pledged to double its digital audience as it seeks to create a sustainable future for journalism.
