Newspaper’s heritage scheme passes 50 blue plaques honouring the past
A unique scheme run by a local newspaper to celebrate their area’s heritage has resulted in more than 50 blue plaques being placed around its borough.
Readers are asked to vote for locations which deserve a blue plaque.
Stock Aitken Waterman, the legendary British songwriting and production trio, have been celebrated with a blue plaque at their former Vine Yard music studio in Borough, after winning this year’s vote by a landslide.
Between 1984 and 1993, Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman sold over 200 million records worldwide, producing iconic hits for artists such as Bananarama, Donna Summer, Cliff Richard, Paul McCartney, Kylie Minogue, and Rick Astley.
The trio returned to their original building to see the the plaque be unveiled.
In a joint statement, Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman said: “We’re naturally very pleased to have been awarded a Heritage Blue plaque, and grateful to Southwark Heritage Association and Southwark Council for this honour. But we also feel this is as much for the fans who voted for us and for all those who have stuck with us over the years.”
