Newsrooms urge readers to mark Remembrance Sunday

Titles across JPIMedia are urging readers in their towns and cities to take part in a two-minute doorstep silence this Remembrance Sunday (November 8).

They have also produced a special Poppy Poster, backed by the Royal British Legion, which they will publish in titles throughout the country in the coming week, and are encouraging people to display it in their windows, to mark Remembrance Sunday.

Jean MacQuarrie, Editor-in-Chief of JPIMedia’s Yorkshire Weekly titles, organised the poster with the RBL.

She said: “Remembrance Sunday parades and wreath laying ceremonies are huge and important events in all our communities every year. In fact, they seem to have become ever larger gatherings in recent years. So it was so sad to realise the pandemic meant that this year so many are either not taking place, or are going to be very small, strictly limited gatherings to observe the restrictions in place.

“We are asking readers to stand on their doorsteps at 11am on Remembrance Sunday and observe their own two minute silence, so even if they can’t join together in an Act of Remembrance, we can still make this mark of respect.

“The deputy editor of The Scarborough News, Steve Bambridge, came up with the idea of creating and publishing a Poppy poster, as a full page,.to show we still remember in 2020. The poster was designed by John Clerkin and we asked the RBL to back it with their logo, which they were more than happy to do.

“We hope readers will display our Poppy poster in their windows, or hold it when they are observing their two minute doorstep silence, to show that, even during this pandemic, we still remember.”

Readers are also being asked to support the poppy appeal more than ever this year with donations to the RBL, as there may be more limited sales of poppies due to Covid restrictions.

The campaign has been backed by local community leaders and the Director of Fundraising for the RBL Claire Rowcliffe, who has thanked all the JPIMedia titles for their ‘fantastic support’.
