Northern Echo’s simple message to Capital of Culture judges
The Northern Echo cleared its front page on Monday to back County Durham’s bid to be UK Capital of Culture in 2025.
The county is battling Bradford, Wrexham and Southampton for the honour, which will be chosen for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.
Judges are visiting each place to hear why that location should be named Capital of Culture.
The paper’s splash asked: “What would could you ask for?” with a quote from celebrated journalist-turned-travel-writer Bill Bryson also appearing on the front.
Inside, the paper set out how the area planned to wow judges, and revealed how government ministers have already said they are impressed by the bid.
It also revealed well-known faces backing the bid, including Tony Blair, Britain’s Got Talent winner Lost Voice Guy and TV’s Jeremy Vine, himself a former regional press journalist.
A leader column added: “It would mean so much for us all to win and would have a dramatically positive effect on the region for years to come.
“It would be levelling up writ large so come on judges — it’s over to you!”
