Podcasts and local journalists make shortlist at Podcast Publisher Awards

Two regional journalists have been shortlisted as podcast publishing heroes at a well known awards ceremony.

Andrew Musgrove, who edits the Everything is Black and White Podcast about Newcastle United at ChronicleLive, joins Daniel McLaughlin on the shortlist for the podcast publishing hero prize at the Publisher Podcast Awards, to be held in June.

Andrew, who also helps produced the populat 1904 Club podcast in Hull, releases five or six episodes of Everything is Black and White weekly, and is described in the nomination as ‘becoming well know among Newcastle United fans for his sometimes wild predications and opinions — that often turn out right.’

Daniel, who is a podcast producer at Reach, is described by those who nominated him as ‘the most passionate journalist I’ve come across about podcasting and audio in my 20 years in the industry.’

In the podcast categories, a number of regional news and topical podcasts from National World and publisher Reach are shortlisted.

Nicola Adam, podcast lead at editor in chief (North) at National World, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to see podcasts from National World have been shortlisted 15 times at the National 2025 Publisher Podcast Awards against titans of the industry.

“The podcasts face competition from across the publisher spectrum including The Telegraph, Bloomberg, Reuters, The Times, BBC, Financial Times, The Conversation, The New Statesman, Reach and more.

“Amazing work from our teams.”

Booky, a snob-free podcast about books and authors, is shortlisted in the Best cultural podcast, best entertainment podcast, best hobbies and special interest,

Screen Babble, which helps people navigate what to watch on TV, is shortlisted in best entertainment podcast,

Scran, from the Scotsman, is shortlisted in best health, wellbeing and food podcast, and also in the best partner podcast award, which looks at projects developed with a partner.

The Northern Agenda’s ‘Our Kids in the North’ is shortlisted in the best limited series podcast, while the Northern Agenda joins The Scotsman’s Steamie and Sunderland Echo’s Wearside Echoes.

The Parched Pea, a podcast partnership between Blog Preston and the Lancashire Post, is also shortlisted, as well as in best partner podcast.

The Steamie is also shortlisted in best political podcast.

Everything is Black and White, ChronicleLive’s Newcastle United Podcast, joins the Claret and Blue podcast about Aston Villa from BirminghamLive, in being shortlisted for best sports podcast, along with National World’s Athletics Weekly podcast.
