The Journalist’s Charity has added one of regional journalism’s best known editors to its board of Trustees.

Alison Gow, has been a journalist for more than 30 years, working across print and digital brands including the Liverpool Echo, Daily Post, and WalesOnline.

In two decades of working for Reach plc, she conceived and implemented a number of digital transformation projects and brand launches for Reach plc, including the digital-first newsroom model. Most recently Alison restructured the Nationals and Regionals multimedia departments.

Alison said: “I have always been an admirer and supporter of the Journalists’ Charity, and have seen first hand the important work it’s funded, including supporting the Journalism Diversity Fund.

Nowadays, with the cost of living crisis hitting people in many different ways, it is more important than ever that journalists at every point in their career know the JC is there for them should they need it.

Becoming a trustee is a privilege and I am thrilled to be a part of the team and building on the great work that’s already been achieved.”

The Journalists’ Charity was founded by Charles Dickens in 1864 to help journalists and their dependants going through tough times.

More than a 150 years later, the organisation remains committed to providing advice and support to individuals working across the industry, at a time when journalism has arguably never been more important to society.

As well as offering friendly help and guidance to journalists of all ages and backgrounds, the charity provides confidential advice, emergency support and financial assistance, often when there’s nowhere else to turn.

It also works closely with a number of partner organisations including The Printing Charity, NUJ Extra and Step Change to signpost other specialist services.

The charity supports a range of events throughout the year which offer networking and career development opportunities.
