The Behind Local News Conference is to return in 2019, with a day dedicated to digital and community journalism.
The first BLN conference was held in Wolverhampton last May and was attended by over 100 journalists from across the UK’s regional press.
Now Facebook, along with the NCJT, is joining forces with BLN to support a second one-day event, to be held in January in Leicester.
The event will coincide with the recruitment of around 80 community trainee journalists as part of Facebook’s partnership with the NCTJ and regional publishers, called the Community News Initiative.
Building on the success of last year’s conference, the day will be open to regional journalists from across the UK.
It will include a series of panels, keynote speeches and hands-on workshops, all designed to inspire those attending to try new things when they return to the newsroom.
Details of the day’s agenda will be announced in the next few weeks, but will include hand-on workshops around making the most Facebook’s various tools for digital journalism
Sian Cox-Brooker, strategic partner manager at Facebook, said: “Local news plays an important role in building and informing communities across the UK so we’re delighted to support this conference.
“We’re looking forward to hosting training workshops and discussing a wide range of issues affecting the news industry.”
Joanne Butcher, chief executive of the NCTJ, said: “The inaugural Behind Local News event was a fantastic opportunity for regional editors and journalists to discuss the latest digital developments in our industry.
“So the 2019 conference will be the perfect forum to explore some of the detail of the exciting new Community News Project and to share ideas to make it a big success.”
