A local news email is celebrating hitting 1,000 paying subscribers.

The Sheffield Tribune, set up in 2021 by former Sheffield Star journalist Dan Hayes, began 2022 with 508 paying subscribers and ended the year on 1,004.

It is one of three local newsletters published by Millers Publishing Company, set up in 2020 and which also produces paid-for local newsletters in Manchester and Liverpool.

Like its sister titles, some newsletters are free to air, while others, containing long-read features about local issues, are for paying subscribers only.

Dan told subscribers in a recent email: “Looking back at 2022, it’s been a phenomenal year — our first full year in existence! In the last 12 months we’ve published around 200 stories and doubled our membership from 508 paying subscribers to 1,004.”

In the email, Dan also shared some of his favourite articles from each month in 2022.

They include a look at the Gleadless Valley estate as it celebrated its 60th anniversary, how Sheffield reclaimed its rivers and the one remaining pub in the Attercliffe area.

Dan added: “Stories as good as these are only possible because we have so many members who back our vision and fund our work.”

Earlier this year, Millers Publishing founder Joshi Herrmann said their first newsletter, The Mill, had achieved financial sustainability with 1,600 paying subscribers.
