Local news organisations are well represented at an awards programme designed to shine a spotlight on how to build a new future for journalism.

The shortlist for Press Gazette’s Future of Media Awards was revealed last week, including categories which are open only to regional and specialist publications.

In the digital storytelling category, The Courier/Press and Journal’s ongoing Tracking the High Street series is shortlisted, along with The Herald’s New Highland Clearances. Reach’s data unit is shortlisted for automated coverage of the cost of living crisis.

The Courier is also shortlisted in the live news category, for coverage of the Aberfeldy shooting.

KentOnline’s Daily Briefing, The Bureau of Investigative Journalism’s Uncovered, Cheapskate London’s own newsletter and WalesOnline’s Inside Welsh Rugby are all shortlisted for the specialist/regional newsletter of the year.

In online video (specialist/regional), the Yorkshire Post’s Meet the Makers series is shortlisted, while Bristol Cable’s Cable Audio is shortlisted for Podcast (specialist/regional).

The Cable is also shortlisted for its 23/24 membership drive, which has attracted 342 nw members, 12 patrons and increased contributions from a further 500 people.

In app of the year, the Newsquest title Hampshire Chronicle will compete with The Telegraph and FT Edit. In Regional/local website of the year, KentOnline, So Glos and BV Magazine are all shortlisted.

Press Gazette editor-in-chief and chairman of judges Dominic Ponsford said: “These awards are special because they are free to enter and are judged by an unrivalled panel of industry experts. Over the last three weeks the 33 judges have worked tirelessly to ensure the entries were properly scrutinised.

“Over two days of in-person discussions, the judges kicked the tyres of all the entries and debated their merits in order to ensure we arrived at fair shortlists.

“The finalists provide a snapshot of publishers who are lighting the way to a sustainable future for quality journalism in the digital age.”

The winners will be announced in September at Press Gazette’s Future of Media conference.
