Everything you need to know about the Women in Local News Awards

Nominations for the first Women In Local News Awards are now open.

The Awards, announced on International Women’s Day, have been set up to celebrate the impact women have had in local news over the 12 months.

Who can enter?

Entries can be made either people wishing to nominate themselves, as is the case with other journalism awards, or by people wishing to nominate someone.

For three categories — newsroom unsung hero, mentor and inspiring journalist — entries should be third party nominations only.

Nominations are sought from anywhere in local journalism, regardless of employer or medium. If you’re doing local journalism, please consider entering!

How much does it cost to enter?

Nominations and entries are free.

When is the closing dte?

April 15, 2021.

Can I nominate the same person for multiple categories?

Yes, but please provide an entry for each award relating to the criteria for that award.

What work can be included in an entry?

Any work published between March 1st 2020 and March 8th 2021 can be eligible

How many stories should be included in an entry?

We would ask for no more than 3 stories to be included in any one entry. Each story may have multiple links, however, showing how the overall story developed.

How will the judging process work?

We are assembly a panel of independent judges who will create shortlists for each category. We will then publish the shortlist for each category, before announcing winners during May.

What will winners receive?

Winners will receive a trophy for their award. The overall journalist of the year, chosen from those shortlisted by the judges, will also receive £500, sponsored by Women In Journalism.
