Rockford, IL — Colin McGinnis, Director of Policy, Advocacy and Research at Being Black at School, today released the following statement on the nomination of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education:

Being Black at School (BBAS) looks forward to working with the Secretary of Education nominee to ensure that all children in American schools are able to obtain the highest quality education possible.

However, BBAS stresses that, as Secretary of Education, Mrs. DeVos must fight for and protect the well-being of all students — regardless of race, income, sexual orientation, academic background or ability.

It is essential that the Secretary nominee stands up and speaks out against discrimination, intolerance and bullying in any form.

Mrs. DeVos has a questionable record with equity, particularly with LGBTQ Americans, which BBAS will not ignore. If and when the Secretary nominee fails to protect the well-being of children, BBAS will stand with all students, as always.

BBAS recognizes the effects of bias and conflict-driven relationships on children’s academic and social development. We will not tolerate hatred of any form in our schools nor policies that encourage inequity in our education system, particularly for black students.

Being Black at School vows to stand with and protect our most vulnerable students — no matter who the Secretary of Education is — and we invite the Secretary nominee to do the same.
