MICROFICTION
Second Chance
100-word story
“Mommy, look!” cried the little girl, pulling at her mother’s jacket.
Beyond their parked car, a plastic grocery sack caught on a branch fluttered wildly.
“It’s a bird, honey,” the mother replied. “Trapped inside.” The trees grew from a shallow gulley, placing the branch just out of her reach.
They searched until they found a long stick. The woman caught the edge of the bag, lifting it just enough to free the panicked fledgling.
“We saved him!” the child exclaimed, jumping around. “He got a second chance!”
The tabby crouching in the shadows flicked his tail. Rats. Maybe next time.
