2 million Ukraine citizens had fled their home by March 7th 2022, when Sunflowers, this song, was finalized. For many of us, plunging into the unknown is unimaginable. Further, fire and destruction raining from the sky is unfathomable and terrifying. Today that number has reached a heartsinking 10 million.

Fear can be paralyzing. Sometimes people get stuck. A woman’s neighborhood might be burning down with evacuation order knocking at their door yet they simply do not leave. Perhaps someone is in a terrible employment or domestic situation yet unable to seek solutions. Maybe they are drowning in self- destruction and lose the ability to know which way the air is.

Sunflowers, the song, has a “Gotta go” chorus, because sometimes, we gotta go. Beyond the song, let’s honor those who chose to stay.

Sunflowers Stand Tall

Love of country. It’s our land. It’s our country. Defending our home. Way of life. Life is here.

Nowhere to run. Nowhere to go. Stay or go?

Keep family together. Mom is here. Dad lives here. Cannot separate them. Son is fighting. Cannot leave love.

Cannot leave animals. Cannot take animals.

Protecting and supporting. Food and aid.

Simply cannot go. Children are young. Parents are old. Unable to leave. Paralyzed by fear. Must keep normality. Solace of routine.

We gotta stay. We live here. We cannot flee.

Where to go? Asylum isn’t easy. International visa issues. Leaving is disorienting.

Love always wins. Sunshine not darkness.

Got no words? You’re not alone.

Face of war. Peace is desired. Stop the war. Make them stop. Destroying our achievements. Obliterating our efforts. Cannot control us. We’d rather die. Cannot give up. This is awful.

Fight is here. Stay and fight?

Freedom is life.

Home is heart.

~~

Those who love their country, and stayed behind to defend and protect others, and their country embody the true definition of the word patriot.
