National LGBTI 2020 Survey Results: Get to know the lived realities of LGBTI people in the Dominican Republic

--

The Executive Summary on the results of the first National Survey for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex (LGBTI) people in the Dominican Republic is now available.

The National LGBTI Survey is the most comprehensive study conducted at national level on the socio-demographic and living conditions of LGBTI people in the Dominican Republic, and it identifies the structural barriers that hinder the full exercise of the human rights of LGBTI people in the country. The study involved a survey with 7,122 responses from all over the country, as well as the responses from LGBTI Dominicans living abroad.

The survey provides evidence of the impact that stigma has on LGBTI people, as well as the social and economic costs related to the exclusion and discrimination they face, which requires joint action by state institutions, civil society, academia, faith-based organisations, the media and the private sector to promote inclusion and end the inequalities experienced by LGBTI people.

The objective of this survey was to expand statistical information regarding the socio-demographic characteristics of the LGBTI population in the Dominican Republic, collecting data on the situation and protection of their human rights to education, security, health and employment, among others, in order to provide evidence for future decision-making processes and the formulation of public policies from an inclusive approach.

The survey, conducted through digital channels, was launched in December 2020, supported by the United States Government through USAID, the Embassy of the United Kingdom, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the framework of the “Being LGBTI in the Caribbean” (BLIC) Project, the Institute for Research and Gender and Family Studies of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (IGEF-UASD) and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
