The environment you are in, or choose, matters the most for your growth

I always felt strongly that in your daily job, the main aspects like — how happy you are, what you learn and how much you improve over time consistently depends on the environment you create or choose for yourself.

There are multiple contributors to what I mean by ‘environment’ here.

- Work culture is the most important of all in my opinion. A toxic culture will only lead to disengagement and burnout while a real inclusive and supportive culture fosters creativity, innovation and collaboration.

- Colleagues are equal contributors to your well being and collective success. Positive relationships and supportive peers are going to help us a lot in the long run with regards to job satisfaction. Having access to mentors is a real bonus.

- Getting the right opportunities matters. I have seen in my career that when your leader trusts you to take up a complex and challenging project or design and believes in you, giving you the freedom to fail and learn, that’s your best case scenario for career growth.

- Lastly, the physical work environment carries a ton of weightage to how much you focus, be creative and how organized you are personally at work as well. Declutter your workspace, reduce distractions and enable yourself to do Deep Work.

Do you have all of these at your workplace today ? What else do you think will contribute to improving the environment you are working in today, and in turn help your career growth and job satisfaction ?
