Being and Time — A reading
I have decided to read Being and Time again. And I have started it and have gotten to page 45 or so. I am reading it in order to look for some things in it which relate to a theory that I have had recently about it. So my reading will be somewhat slanted toward that purpose. But since it is considered a hard book to read I thought it might be useful for others if we read along together and saw what is interesting in Being and Time by Heidegger. To me it is a fascinating book mostly for its novelty, but also for its relation to the work of Husserl, Heidegger, Nietzsche and now with the recent interpretations Aristotle. As I work though the book, we will see how far we can get, you can post questions on the Quroa Heidegger topic for myself and others to try to answer. Or if you are interested in a close reading then perhaps you can join us. This is a good place to start as an introduction to the Continental Tradition. Because with Heidegger the tradition goes in a fundamentally new direction. If you would like to join the slow reading group send me a message about your interest and your background, and why you want to read Being and Time and we will see if we can get a quorum for this kind of slow reading project on Quora. It will definitely be a challenge.
One of my reasons for trying to do this is in order to bring together into one place what I have referred to many times on Quora wich is the theory of the Meta-levels of Being which to my mind is the heart of the Continental Tradition. If I am successful in getting through B&T then perhaps we will go on to Merleau-Ponty and Derrida and Deleuze and look at how they explore different meta-levels of Being. It may turn out to the a whirl wind tour, but it will give me a chance to return to some original texts and see whether they are as I remember them. This is of course a long term project, and whether I will be able to sustain it is a question. But at least it will give us a chance to see if it is possible to sustain serious conversation about a significant philosophical work on Quora. That I think is a worthy experiment.
