“True Story” The Strength to Keep Going

When I first spoke with the MLH Advocate of Judicial and Legislative Reform during our coaching session, I did not fully grasp the depths of her resilience. I was shocked. I felt how small my issues, were and how strong she was. As we settled into our conversation, her story unfolded like the pages of a powerful story or scenes of a beautiful movie. Melissa’s life has been shaped by adversity, yet she has remained hopeful in her pursuit of a brighter future for herself and her daughter.

What struck me the most about Melissa was not just the challenges she has overcome, but the determination she is holding to keep going despite them. Homelessness, a lack of stability, and relentless other obstacles might have broken others including me, but for Melissa, all those issues became reasons to fight harder. She is fighting harder. Even when luck seemed to betray her, she found the strength to press on, to move on, to keep going. She told me that this strength is fueled by her love for her daughter and a belief in her potential to rise above. She doesn’t want her daughter to suffer as she suffered herself.
