You may know of the character Amy Brookheimer from the TV series Veep (fantasitc show to watch if you havent already). The show is a comical spin on the political campaigns and offices of the US administration. Through the different seasons, Amy (played by the talented Anna Chlumsky) dons different roles, the most notable one being Chief of Staff to Selina Meyer. Amy is Selina’s go-to person for most things — she runs her strategy, assists her campaigns, and is a confidante on a personal level too. Here are 3 dramatic and iconic moments of Amy as Chief of Staff

1) Being honest with the leader
In this scene, Selina has an advisor, Karen Collins, who is a yes-man and adds little value especially during crucial decision making. Everyone in the team can see this except Selina. Amy reaches a breaking point and goes into a tirage against Karen, calling out her flakiness. This causes Selina to re-evaluate Karen’s advice and see her blind spot.

Being in the vantage position of CoS means that you will have to warn your leader of aspects they may be blind to. The leader trusts you and expects you to look out for them.

2) Keeping your calm while fixing an issue
Mistakes happen to the best of us. What is important is how we handle it, fix it and learn from it all while keeping your cool. In this scene, Amy displays how she keeps her cool while Selina loses it on her.

When there are moments where the leader is not in her best mood, it falls upon the CoS to bring the situation under control by addressing the issue in a calm fashion.

3) Offering encouragement and confidence

In one of the most heartwarming moments of the series, the emotional connection between Amy and Selina is displayed in this scene. In the Season 4 finale, Selina is a mess because of the election results being tied and Amy, who had left her CoS role recently, comes back to support Selina. At the moment when Selina is vulnearable and down, Amy offers her a short pep talk to “ma’am up” and take the situation head on.

Can you relate to Amy in your role as Chief of Staff? Are there more moments of Amy that stand out to you? Do share them and I will update the list!
