NIH-funded trial offers another promising treatment regimen

Ever since this pandemic began — almost a year already — clinicians and researchers have desperately been searching for treatments and cures for this novel coronavirus that has caused devastating illness in so many people around the world.

Many have flopped (hydroxychloroquine being chief among them), and others that initially showed some promise have not panned out to be the case (lopinavir/ritonavir and ivermectin come to mind here) in randomized trials. Yet, as the months elapsed from the first cases reported in Wuhan, good research has been conducted that have demonstrated efficacy for some treatments.

Dexamethasone and remdesivir have been shown to improve outcomes in patients with Covid-19, and they are now part of treatment guidelines for clinicians caring for patients with this disease. There has been particular emphasis on therapies that suppress or modulate the body’s immune response to the virus, as this response has wreaked havoc on the lungs and other organ systems in those patients with severe, life-threatening Covid-19.
