I Love My Protein. But Can I Get Too Much?

6 min readMar 20, 2025

I am chasing the muscle pump as an over-60 bodybuilding (physique division) competitor.

With two months until the Seattle-area Emerald Cup competition, I am laser-focused on resistance training and diet (including getting sufficient protein).

I recently wrote a piece extolling the virtues of protein as an essential tool to facilitate muscle growth and maintenance.

But even the best things — when taken to extremes — can backfire.

How much shake chugging and chicken breast devouring can I do before I suffer health consequences?

My Goals For This Essay

You probably don’t need me to tell you that protein is essential.

Often described as a critical “building block” for good health, protein helps your body build muscle, clot blood, fight infection, repair cells, and more.
