It’s slimy, sticky, and stringy.

But could this food, which looks like it has spider webs extending from it, be a key to my Japanese wife's family's longevity?

Natto is a curious dish with a unique texture and aroma that may initially repel the uninitiated.

It has a distinct umami flavor with a hint of sweetness and a slightly nutty undertone.

I often see Japanese top natto with chives, soy sauce, mustard, or other seasonings.

In Japan, natto is typically topped with soy sauce, mustard, chives, or other seasonings and served with cooked rice.

I’m Not Gonna Lie

Full disclosure: Natto is not for me.

However, taste is a personal preference, and just like U.S. President George H.W. Bush’s dislike for broccoli, it doesn’t mean everyone will feel the same way about natto.

Here’s President BushL

“I do not like broccoli. And I haven’t liked it since I was a little kid. And my mother made me eat it. Now I’m president of the United States.”
