Another month in the books! This May we helped you create visual representations of data to aid in decision making. While behind the scenes we were preparing for the first University Hackathon 2020!

Storytelling with Data

The world has slowly but surely been moving towards more data-driven decision making. But how? How can you take tables of numbers and transform it into actionable information? The answer is visualization.

Using the data that you have, and transforming it into a visual representation of the most important information is the best way to communicate insights. During Beirut AI’s Storytelling with Data Workshop the participants got inspired by existing dashboards. With the help of Samer Salameh, the participants also analyzed the dashboards and understood the important parts of it. Samer then walked the participants through creating their own dashboards with PowerBI using the world-o-meter COVID-19 data.

We would love to see the dashboards you create! Share your dashboards with us on social media by tagging us in the posts you share using @beirutai!

University Hackathon 2020

Just a few more days before we kick off the Beirut AI University Hackathon 2020!

The hackathon is bringing together students from all over Lebanon to ideate, create and innovate to bring forward solutions for a more self-sustained Lebanon! Fifteen teams are joining in to build and propose AI solutions related to agriculture, economy, healthcare, electricity, manufacturing, and transportation. Teams of machine learning and software developers, business practitioners and domain specialists made up of Lebanon’s bright youth came together and we can’t wait to see the solutions they come up with.

Join us on Sunday June 7 for a live stream of our Closing Ceremony where you can watch our teams pitching their solutions to a panel of judges! We will also be announcing the top 3 winning teams!

To tune in on the event, make sure you are following our Facebook Page to be alerted with a notification! You can also follow our University Hackathon’s Facebook Event for more details.

Racial Bias In Artificial Intelligence

Recently there were many unnecessary losses of life that have forced many of us to openly confront ourselves on the matters of racism. It is no secret that racial biases are very deeply ingrained in our societies and consequently in our data. Bias in data in algorithms deployed for healthcare and criminal justice have been reported to unfairly mislabel people based on their race. Since we are starting to rely on AI to make decisions for us we have to be vigilant at fighting racial bias in our solutions.

We need to be aware of these biases and actively work to mitigate them when using AI for critical decision making.

Below are a couple of accessible resources you can use to learn more about best practices for mitigating biases in artificial intelligence solutions.

It’s best that we become aware of such issues as early as possible to ensure that the solutions we put forward are as fair and equitable as possible. We are committed to ensure that Beirut AI is a safe space for everyone who is enthusiastic about AI and creating solutions to problems everyone faces on a daily basis.
