There’s is nothing like a savory crispy flammekuechle topped with créme fraîche, onions, and lardons (think bacon but EVEN better), all washed down with a glass of delicious Gewürztraminer! Flammekuechle… Gewürztraminer… where are we?!? Bordering Germany and Switzerland, the Alsace region of France is a very special part of Europe, where the French and German cultures, cuisines, and traditions have been blending for centuries.

Although my favorite time to visit Alsace is December, since every picturesque town is lit up and bustling with charming Christmas markets and piping hot vin brûlée, I must admit that autumn in Alsace is just as magical! It’s the ideal time to visit the spectacular medieval castles, churches, and villages. The Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is the most famous castle dating from the 12th century. Walking within these walls will take you back in time to knights and ladies. Strasbourg is the capital of the region and it’s stunning cathedral and charming old town should not be missed! This is also the best time to explore the beautiful Route des Vin d’Alsace. Yup, that’s over 100 miles of the Alsatian Wine Route.

Fun fact: There is a mini- Statue of Liberty in Colmar to honor it’s designer Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who was from Colmar!
