With its playground of over 6000 islands dotted throughout its surrounding blue marble waters and enough history (both factual and mythological) to fill an entire library, Greece, the southern-most country of Europe, is a wonderful spot to bring your kids for a family vacation. Mythology has always fascinated children (most recently with the Percy Jackson series of books and films) and there is no better place to immerse oneself in the fantasy lands of the ancients gods than the actual areas that were their birthplaces, battlegrounds and hangouts. All across Greece, you can find points of interest (our local guides are great at bringing the myths to life!)

Athens is home to the 2500 year-old Parthenon, the Temple to Athena, set on the Acropolis, the highest point of the city and therefore closest to the gods. The climb up is an adventure in itself- what kid doesn’t love scrambling up a pile of rocks!

The Acropolis museum, just opened in 2009, houses an impressive array of objects that were found on the hillsides of the Acropolis. Actually located on the slopes of the Acropolis, some sections of the museum have a transparent floor which allows visitors to view the actual archeological excavations- inspiration for your own young Indiana Jones! The museum also caters to families, providing educational backpacks for children to creatively discover the museum on their own. More information can be found at the museum’s website.

Nearby is the Hellenic Children’s museum, also worth a visit. Though not everything will be in English, the whole philosophy of the museum is to learn through hands-on experience and therefore, the language ‘barrier’ doesn’t really matter.

Greece, like all Mediterranean countries, adores children and will spoil them if you’re not careful. Even though dinner time is later than most travellers are used to, children are welcome guests in restaurants and cafes. Greek food is also kid-friendly…. lots of eating with your hands!

Perhaps the biggest draw of Greece for most kids is its miles and miles of extraordinary coastline and gorgeous islands: pristine waters and sandy, pebbly or rock beaches- depending on your tastes.

Without a doubt, Greece has something for everyone and is the perfect spot to plan all or part of a family vacation. With our family-friendly guides and tours, pre-arranged transportation and handpicked hotels and villas, Bella Vita Travels would love to help you and your family plan a stress-free unforgettable trip to this (literally) mythic area of the Mediterranean!
