The Beaches of Andalusia
When traveling to Spain, often times it seems that we all get caught up in the hustle and bustle, boisterous nightlife, and timeless romance that major cities throughout the country provide. While all of these cities hold nothing short of amazing qualities that should never be overlooked, an area of Spain that is just south of well-known cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, provides an enriching and authentic holiday. The southern, coastal region of Spain called Andalusia (which houses many of the amazing qualities Spain is known for, such as the beautiful architecture, rich history, and amazing tapas) is also home to multiple stunning beachfronts along the coast, creating an unforgettable traveling experience. Below, in no specific order, are the three beaches that create much different, unique experiences when traveling to Andalusia.
Playa del Cristo, within Costa del Sol, is one of a kind. El Cristo is generally the most ideal out of the three for families and daytime fun. With an almost cove-like presentation, El Cristo is shielded from one of nature’s most colossal inconveniences, the wind. The surrounding cove aids in blocking the wind, maintaining a consistently warm temperature. El Cristo is a beach that is extremely accessible to adults traveling with children during the day, but is also a charming romantic cove for couples in the evenings. Like most beaches along this coast, the water is pleasantly warm and there is a very fun and energetic vibe, truly an optimal setting for any holiday getaway!
Playa de los Genoveses, located in Costa de Almeria, is a beach shore found within one of Andalusia’s largest protected areas, Cabo de Gata National Park. The park itself is home to many historic roots including El Fraile, the highest peak in the region as well as a point of volcanic origin. Along with El Fraile, this national park is home to some hidden gems of beaches. Los Genoveses stands out the most beautiful, with stunning views, especially at sunset. The scenery as a whole is breathtaking with striking views of cliffs and breathtakingly clear blue water. The ambiance is much quieter and very relaxed, the perfect place unwind and appreciate your surroundings.
While the two beaches mentioned above maintain their individuality, vibrant Matalascañas, located in Costa de la Luz, does not disappoint either. The beach with the most resort-like feel, you’ll find plenty of people, both locals and tourists, sunbathing and a louder, spirited crowd. This beach is the most accessible to Seville and very popular with a younger crowd. With the near-by city landscape visible from the beach, sun beds for relaxing and a strand with cafes and restaurants spanning along the coastline. Though more developed than the other beaches, Matalascañas maintains a special charm with its fun strand that offers something for everyone.
The three beaches listed above are only a few of the many beaches blanketed across the southern coast. No matter what part of Andalusia you find yourself in, the south of Spain as a whole is a beautiful, picturesque experience. The beaches along the coast leave such a phenomenal imprint, and are all worth submerging in fully. Each beach has its own unique character creating a dynamic experience for anyone traveling there. The diversity of each beach leaves space for anyone traveling to find a perfect, relaxing fit. Andalusia allows for everyone to create their own experience, which is one of the true wonders of travel!
