Are you searching for the one?

Mobile provider, that is. While we were updating our new mobile plans with even more data, we got to thinking…there are a lot of options out there, and it can be overwhelming to know how to find true love with the mobile service that’s right for you.

Whether you’re after a cheaper plan, more data or just want to switch over to a network that supports the environment — we’re here to help.

Ready to dive in? Here’s what to keep in mind.

1. Phone or no phone?

You’ll need to consider if you need a new phone.

Hard fact time: each year, Australians produce more than 100,000 tonnes of electrical waste. If you do need to replace your phone, give Mother Nature a break and dispose of it responsibly. Mobile Muster will recycle all mobiles.

If a new device is on the cards, compare all the deals and consider how long you want to be locked in. Check out Finder, a comparison site which can help.

If your current phone is still workin’ like a charm, check that it will work with a different SIM and isn’t locked to a certain network. If it is, have a chat with your original provider and request they unlock your device. There may be a charge, but you’ll need to do this before you’re able to pop in a fresh SIM.

2. Data

Data makes the world go ‘round these days, so it’s an important consideration. Pay attention to how much data is offered each month, what happens if you don’t use it all (or use too much!). Check what your new provider offers and how their data-top up works in case future you needs the extra boost. *hint hint Belong offers unlimited data banking as long as your mobile service is active. Plus, you can data gift to your mates who are also on Belong. Check out our range of flexible mobile plans.

3. Calls and texts

Many mobile services should cover the basics, like unlimited standard national calls and texts. If you need to buzz across the seas on the regular, check out how international calls and texts affect your new plan, as well as which countries are included.

Consider mobile coverage and make sure your mobile connection can go where you go.

4. Coverage

You’ll need to actually be covered by your new network.

Alongside the calls you’ll be making from the comfort of your bed, it’s important to think about where else you’ll be using your service. If you’ve got family living in the country or like to frequent outback holiday destinations — check those areas too.

How do you do this? Many mobile providers have a coverage map showing the areas they service, and which networks are available. The availability of connections can vary depending on where you are and each provider offers their service on different networks (3G, 4G or 5G). Make sure you’ll be able to get connection before jumping in.

We use part of Telstra’s 3G and 4G network, so we cover more than 98.8% of the population with 3G and 97% of the population with 4G.

5. Prepaid or postpaid?

Are you after a prepaid service (where you generally pay for your service as you go) or one that’s postpaid (where you usually pay each month and might be locked into a contract)?

If you’re happy with your phone, you may want to consider a SIM-only plan which won’t lock you into a contract. These plans often work like a subscription, similar to prepaid services. This might be handy if you want to be organised with payments but don’t want to commit long-term.

Make sure to check with your provider beforehand if you’re unsure.

6. Billing and contracts

Bill shock ain’t cute. Whatever your contract type, suss out exactly how you’ll be billed (direct debit, online statement, snail mail paper bill), whether late fees apply, and if you get charged extra if you go over your data and calling allowances.

You’ll also need to check if the provider is locking you down for a certain period of time, or if you’re free to change plans as you need to.

7. Keeping your number or getting a new one

Once you’ve found a plan worth switching for, you’ll need to decide whether you want a snazzy new number or if you’d like to keep your OG one.

Had your number since the old school Nokia days? Your new provider can keep your legacy going. It’s called ‘porting’.

If you’d like to port your number, it’s important that your name, date of birth and the account number matches — most mobile porting systems are quite strict, so even if your nickname is basically your real name, this will affect the transfer process. If you’re bumping into any issues porting, you can contact your current provider to check the account details they have on file.

Consider moving your existing service before your next bill to avoid paying twice. It’s also worth thinking about porting your number on a weekday (most porting hours are kind of like the post office). Depending on the day and time your place the order, it generally takes between 3–72 hours.
