Keep your family protected over the holidays

Ever heard of holding your collar when seeing an ambulance? Neither had we. How about the other superstition of lifting your left arm on the first sight of ambos? Alright, we get the message.

Looking after yourself is important, and it’s easier than you think to keep you and your family protected. In case of an emergency, paramedics are able to reach out to your loved ones and keep them in the loop if enabled.

With that in mind, here are some handy ways to set up an ICE (short for in case of an emergency) contact on your phone.

Using an iOS device (using iOS 13.2)

If you’ve got an iPhone, you can set-up an emergency contact by following these steps:

1) Open the ‘Health’ app
2) Tap ‘Profile’
3) Hit the ‘Medical ID’ tab
4) Tap ‘Edit’ towards the top

Just a heads up, you’ll need to make sure that the ‘Show When Locked’ slider is showing as green.

Once you’ve done this, there’ll be an option to fill in a bunch of different fields. Rather than blanking them, it might be worth completing them, even if it’s just an N/A (rinse and repeat).

If you’ve reached this point, just hold on, we’re going home.

5) Scroll down until you see ‘Emergency Contacts’, which will eventually lead you to ‘Add Emergency Contact’.

Choose to either add an existing contact — or enter a fresh one that might not be saved. After a contact has been added, list their relationship to you and that’s it. You’re all done here.

Using an Android device

True to form, setting up an emergency contact on an Android device is as easy as it sounds.

1) Open the ‘Groups’ tab
2) Tap ‘ICE’ or ‘Emergency Contacts’
3) Find the contact (via the plus sign) to select your contact
4) Select or add the people/person you want to add

In case you missed it, everyone listed under ‘Emergency Contacts’ can be called with your mobile being unlocked.
