A row of bright blue mobile phones

It’s never been so easy to get in touch virtually with our mates. Whether they’re down the road or across the globe, those sleek little pocket hoggers of ours can connect us to them in seconds.

If you want to have a chinwag with a friend overseas, you can choose to add international calls to selected countries to your Belong mobile plan. Just jump into your online account to add them on.

But, did you know that you can also use your data to call? These apps can help with that (and will let you have that chat face-to-face using video).

WhatsApp

iPhone & Android

WhatsApp? Nothin’ much, just chatting to some mates.

This app offers voice and video calls, messages and group chats. Need to send a bunch of happy snaps to your family abroad? No worries — you can send attachments up to 100Mb. Score.

Viber

iPhone & Android

From Viber to Viber, the app offers unlimited calls, texts, photos, and videos. You can also make a call to landlines, non-Viber users or anyone who doesn’t have internet with ViberOut for a small charge.

You can also jazz it up a bit with customised background colours, stickers, and GIFS too!

FaceTime

iPhone

They say the best camera you have is the one in your pocket, and that just might be the case for video-calling apps too!

FaceTime is just for the Apple fans out there. It’s already built into your iPhone and can be accessed directly from your contacts list, so there’s no extra fiddling around.

Facebook Messenger

iPhone & Android

It’s Facebook’s chatroom, but it’s also a party with all the functions.

There are group video chats, secret conversations, GIFs, and loads of effects and filters to add to your image. A dog filter, or a bunny filter, that is the question.

Great fun to use when calling a loved one (or five).

Skype

iPhone & Android

Skype is pretty much the quintessential video and voice calling service as it’s accessible to most devices.

Nowadays, Skype is available to mobile and desktops with the ability to share or split a screen and even apply subtitles to video calls.

You’re also able to get access to a local number, or for a low rate call a landline or any mobile.

Signal

iPhone & Android

One of the newer kids on the block, Signal is a multipurpose messaging tool that features end-to-end encryption (for a little added security). Offering group chats, voice and video calls, it’s a no-frills app that’ll get you connected, stat.

Keeping in touch with the click of an app? Good stuff.
