When my spouse and I moved to St. Louis immediately after I graduated college, I encountered one of the two times I was tempted to cheat. One of the engineering managers of our huge test engineering group decided I would be perfect for him. The fact I was married with children did not deter him.

We worked inside a classified secret building; yes, those buildings exist. We were not forbidden to leave the area during the day, but they discouraged it. We were encouraged to bring our lunches and eat inside the structure’s small break area.

Because of that, people who would typically never congregate would talk every day. I made my lunches. My lunch was leftovers from dinner the previous night or a simple sandwich with a small salad.

I would make a large salad on Sunday and eat part of it every day until it was gone. By Friday, the salad looked pitiful — the lettuce leaves wilted, the tomato soggy, and the cucumbers turning brown. I still ate it.

I liked to eat when the café was almost empty, so I would eat lunch at 1:30 p.m., long after everyone else except Joe*. Joe would come in at 1:15 to have his midday meal break, so he was there when I arrived for lunch. Joe was a quiet…
