Although Evangelical Chrisitanity has often been defined by little more than anti-gay messaging, its favorite singer of decades was another story.

Her career in Christian music started when she was age 17. Within a year, she’d recall, she realized she had a gay fanbase. “I’ve always had a big gay following,” she notes in a 2013 interview.

It’s been observed by others.

The musician Shaun Groves, who has toured with Amy, observes in a 2016 blog post:

“While the middle-aged and older couples around them sit politely toe-tapping, gay men stand and sing every word to every song. Pockets of them all across the room.”

But exactly how ‘queer’ her career has been might be a bit surprising.
