In the Bible, God is not your ‘Daddy’

Christians say the word “Abba” is an affectionate term for the deity. They don’t tell you it’s a Nazi hoax.

In church you’ll often be told that God is your Father, in very affectionate terms. To be Christian is presented as you getting the Creator of the Universe as your “Daddy.”

That God is called “Daddy” in the Bible is an article of faith in many churches. They don’t tell you it’s reading developed in Nazi Germany done in the service of Adolph Hitler.

The word “Abba” is used by Jesus amid the crucifixion drama.

When his mortal death comes in view, in Mark 14:36, he says:

“Abba, Father…everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

The Christian reading as “Daddy” makes no sense in context. Jesus wouldn’t say, “Daddy…Father…everything is possible for you.”

This is a moment of profound crisis in which Jesus calls out to his Father making an appeal. But what exactly was going on was mysterious.

Where did the word “Abba” come…
